The plan was to pick up flowers on the way to meet her after work as a witty and incisive gesture about how she would never get him flowers for the anniversary neither of them can be bothered to get exactly right, and it would have worked, if he’d remembered the flowers.

“Do you know what day it is?” she asks when he enters her lobby.

“Heh! Yep,” he says, although he doesn’t, having already forgotten the thing he was just thinking about.

“I was going to get you flowers,” she says, chagrinning, “but I didn’t.”

“Aha,” he says. “I win!”
